Woman locked up in a dark room for 25 years; rescued

In a shocking incident, a 45-year-old woman – a BA graduate no less - was locked up in a dark room for 25 years till she was rescued by police. She was locked up by her own family because she was mentally unsound.

Acting on a information received via phone call, Valpoi Police rescued the 45 year old, Vidduta alias Guni Vasudev Mandrekar resident of Bhandarwada Sanquelim on Saturday.

  Victim’s mother said that the girl was mentally unsound and is undergoing treatment.

She has habit of running away because of which they had kept her locked inside the room.

The window of the room was covered with bricks. When the police team along with members of the NGO reached the address, they found the lady lying on the floor in the dark room.

She is currently being treated at District Hospital, Mapusa.
