Despite promises that Dabolim airport would not see reduced footfall, the data present by airport direct Dhanamjaya Rao speaks of a different reality. Footfalls at the airport are down by nearly 20% in comparison to last year. Whereas in FY 22-23, Dabolim handled 8.4 million passengers, it has only welcomed 7 million passengers this year. Still, Rao remains optimistic saying Dabolim airport “has very good potential even now.”
Any further drop in numbers would have a cascading effect on businesses operating in South Goa. Something that the locals have been fighting about for a long time now. They’re worried that if more airlines shift base to Mopa, the Dabolim airport would turn into a ‘ghost’ airport. However, Airport Director Rao says Dabolim will get additional flights by summer.
