It is a myth that Konkani speaking people are declining in Goa. On the contrary, what is declining are the people who claim that Marathi is their mother tongue.

Along with that, the spoken languages on decline are Urdu, Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu. And what is doubled are the Hindi-speaking people in Goa.

Some Goans are still claiming that Marathi is their mother tongue and therefore it should be made Goa’s official language. But see the reality in the Census figures of 2001 and 2011.

In the last 10 years, the number of Konkani speaking people has risen by almost 2 lakh people. Or by 25 per cent.

And what about Marathi? It has declined by half. From 3 lakhs in 2001 to 1 lakh 59 thousands in 2011. Almost by 48 per cent.

There is a hue and cry over South Indian migrants becoming a dominant community in Goa. And also the Muslims who speak and register their mother tongue as Urdu.

But look at these census figures. Urdu speaking people have reduced by 24 per cent in 10 years. From 54 thousands to 41 thousands.

Kannadigas were 75 thousands in 2001. They have reduced to 68 thousands. 9 per cent decline.

And the Mallyalis have reduced by 14 per cent. From 15 thousands to 13 thousands.

Similar  is the decline of Telugu-speaking people. Reduced from 1 lakh 19 thousands to 1 lakh 11 thousands.

But what is alarmingly rising in Goa is the Hindi-speaking population. It has almost doubled in 10 years. From mere 76 thousands to now 1 lakh 50 thousands. 100 per cent rise.

And this Hindi-speaking population is much more than those Goans who claim that their mother tongue is Marathi. Interestingly, both Marathi and Hindi each are hardly 10 per cent of Goa’s 15 lakh population.

But there is still more. Look at the South Goa figures. The Hindi-speaking people are more than the Marathi-speaking people. Almost 38 thousands more than Marathi.

Goa’s thickly populated talukas are the four coastal talukas. Out of these four, in three talukas the Hindi-speaking population outnumbers the Marathi-speaking population.

In Salcete, it is 21 thousands more, in Mormugao it is 20 thousands more and in Tiswadi, it is almost 10 thousands more. And in Bardez, it is almost equal.

The difference between Marathi and Hindi is not even 1000 people.  But much more less than Konkani speaking Goans.

And look at this. Canacona, Sanguem, Quepem and Ponda were the bastions of Marathi movement at one time. People registering Marathi as their mother tongue have drastically come down in all these four talukas.

Around 3000 Marathi speaking in Canacona compared to 39 thousand Konkani, around 6000 Marathi compared to 48 thousand Konkani in Sanguem, around 18 thousand Marathi speaking compared to 1 lakh 15 thousand Konkani speaking in Ponda and hardly 10 per cent in Quepem, only 6700 Marathi speaking.

Hindi speaking people are not too many, except in Ponda. It is almost equivalent to Marathi speaking. 16 thousand 600.

And these are the figures of three major Marathi bastions.

The difference between Konkani and Marathi speaking people is hardly 10 thousands in Pedne. Almost neck to neck. But in Sattari, it is almost 40 thousand Konkani and only 15 thousand Marathi. In Bicholim, 65 thousand are Konkani speaking and only 18 thousand are Marathi speaking.

Hindi speaking population in all these three talukas is between 1500 to 6000.
